As a child growing up in East Garfield Park in Chicago, Latoya Winters’ life was plagued by loss and tragedy, largely due to gun violence. Fortunately, she was able to find stability in Marillac Social Center, also known as Marillac House, an organization in Chicago that provides vital programs and services in early child education, youth services and community outreach. Through Marillac House, Winters was given opportunities to explore things she never dreamed of – like volleyball, art, cheerleading and poetry – and developed a drive and longing to make something great out of her life. Winter’s experience at Marillac House inspired her to get her master’s degree in social work, so she is now able to give back to others the way Marillac House gave to her.
